Cadore, Italy - July 2024
For a few years now, my partner and I have been immersing ourselves in the talking silence of the Dolomites.
This year we chose the Cadore mountains in Veneto.
They are a spectacle that each time leaves you speechless and listening to what they want to tell you. It begins a mysterious and silent dialogue that opens your heart and leads you back to the beautiful and the essential and, even if only for a few days, you are carried away by their majesty and simplicity at the same time.
You can't help but contemplate the jagged outline of the peaks drawn with a unique irregularity, the colours of the sky and vegetation so sharp and clean: the green seems greener, the blue ever bluer, the white of the clouds is candid and even the brown of the trunks and the earth is full-bodied, warm, strong. The air is lighter and carries unique scents: intense and fresh.
The sounds and noises are few, like whispers speaking in silence and peace.
We choose each evening the route to take the following day, usually the lesser known ones where you rarely meet anyone and can savour the contact with nature that welcomes you in its beauty.
The fatigue in the ascents and descents is sweet and fulfilled by the beauty of the places and destinations reached.
It becomes a journey within yourself in the speaking silence of the mountains that tell you about the greatness and value of life.
This year we chose a hotel in Danta di Cadore, a small village at 1400 metres above sea level, not at all touristy with a breathtaking landscape .... the village is leaning against the mountain and looks out like a balcony onto a small valley surrounded by the majestic Dolomites.
The locals are welcoming. Along the main street, houses line the pavements and there are often benches where young and old stop to chat... At the windows, there are curtains embroidered with lace and flowers everywhere ....if you meet someone, they never fail to greet you in a discreet and polite manner....
And of course you can't miss the fountains with the water flowing cool and strong still at the beginning of its journey down the valley.....A water that quenches the thirst of body and soul.
At the end of the short holiday, it is difficult to say goodbye to these places and return to the chaotic daily routine.
But on your return, each time, you feel different and full of gratitude.
