New York, USA, December 2023
It would be my last time in the city that had most excited me that year. It was the first week of December and the air was freezing. I was coming from Charlotte, where I was supposed to see Lauren Hyll and the Fugees live, but they had canceled at the last minute and I had had a wonderful evening with Bethany, the sister of a close friend of mine, and her friend Marissa.
My flight was on time and I flew through Manhattan to join Luca, a friend from college who hosted me that weekend. It was very nice to see him again after a long time and spend some time together.
On Monday he was away on business, and I worked remotely with a breathtaking view. At 7pm I had afrodance class with that force of nature Judith McCarty, who holds a special place in my heart for her unique way of conveying the origins of afro and charging everyone with in crazy energy.
This is where I met Delphine, a French jewelry designer who moved to New York, with whom I had a wonderful chat for several blocks before we parted ways. I felt like I was made of sugar, with a charge of energy on me that made my eyes sparkle and printed a smile on my face as I passed people.
I then headed toward Rockefeller Center, and when I saw the skating rink, I was at a loss. Christmas songs, lights, decorations.... I was as loose as a Ciobar. On the way home I stopped for a slice of pizza. That glimpse of New York life, carefree and happy, had made my head spin. I walked through the crowded, noisy streets and felt like I was in a movie. On the way to the airport the next day, with my eyes glued to the window, I waved goodbye to my place of the heart.
