Lanzarote, Spain - April 2024
Five days, six friends and a perfect break between Christmas and summer holidays, surrounded by surfing lessons, breathtaking scenery and good food.
Lanzarote is an unexpected Spanish island in the Pacific Ocean that holds immense natural wealth. It has been declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve due to its variety of landscapes, including 30 active volcanoes, endless beaches, sheer cliffs, natural parks and mountains for trekking. In fact, 40% of its territory is regulated by bans to preserve the beauty of the place.
Our days are organised perfectly: breakfast all together, four hours surfing among the waves at the beautiful Famara beach, a packed lunch and an afternoon exploring the black-earth island. We have already had a few surfing lessons in other countries, but this beach surrounded by high rocky cliffs has a different atmosphere that envelops you. Surfing is hard, it makes you physically tired but it has that magical power to free your mind from all thoughts. It allows you to concentrate 100 % on yourself, on your body. The benefits are many and every day is a surprise.
We land in the late afternoon, time to pick up the rental car and leave the bags in our surf house, and we are already on our way in search of the perfect spot for our favourite time of the day. The atardecer is that instant when the sky turns yellow, orange and pink and the sun disappears over the horizon. We stand on top of a mountain, with towels wrapped around our legs to cover us from the cool late April wind, a few beers and some chips. We stay until the sun disappears in our eyes and the moon begins to rise. The holiday could not have started in a better way.
And so, somewhat by chance, we have created our favourite moment of the day when we stop to admire, between one chat and another, the sun setting into the sea, or behind a volcano or behind a cliff or among the vines cultivated in the black earth. The ritual is always the same, the where is always different. The thing to do is simple, buy some chips (our favourite the jamón ones), a few beers and drive around until we find the perfect spot. The scene, very simple but containing beautiful memories, repeats itself every night the same: open boots, uncorked beers, lots of laughter and that's it.
